Can You Swing All The Way Around on a Swing Set?

Many claim to know someone who did once, but is it actually possible to go all the way around on a swing set? Watch this video and read our kid-friendly explanation to find out!

Going All the Way Around Is Impossible

On a regular swing set, going all the way around using only your legs to pump is impossible. Getting all the way around would require strapping a rocket to the swing (not recommended!). The chains holding the swing are actually what account for this. Getting higher on a swing requires slowly building up energy, but as soon as you get above the bar, the chains go slack and you fall slightly, dissipating the extra energy. This prevents you from ever building up enough to go all the way around.

Going All the Way Around For Real

If you replace the chains with a rigid bar, it’s entirely possible to go all the way around, and in fact, this is a common circus trick.

Swing Facts for Kids

Got swing questions? We’ve got swing answers!

  • The world’s largest swing is located in China and is nearly 300 feet tall. It allows riders to reach speeds of up to 80 mph.

  • Greek vases from 1300 B.C. have been found with depictions of women and children on swings, so swings may be some of the world’s oldest playground toys!

  • Various animals including chickens have been found to enjoy swinging on a swing, just like kids!

  • Gibbons are a kind of monkey that are known for getting around by swinging from branch to branch. They can travel up to 35 mph and jump over 50 feet! The science-y term for this kind of movement is “Brachiation.” So next time you see monkey bars at the playground, try out some brachiation!
